TORONTO -- A non-profit group supporting the Tamil Tigers has been added to Canada's list of known terrorism groups.
The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions says it has notified banks that the World Tamil Movement is now on Canada's list of terrorist groups as defined by the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Minister of Public Safety Stockwell Day is expected to make the announcement later today.
The list identifies terrorist organizations to allow financial institutions to freeze assets and contact authorities if they find a match in their database.
Office spokesman Jean Paul Duval says banks and loan companies should be vigilant and watch for groups affiliated with the World Tamil Movement.
Security Expert Michel Juneau-Katsuya says authorities worldwide have recognized the WTM as a front organization, which has funnelled millions of dollars to Tamil terrorist groups.
