Sri Lankan troops inching towards rebel nerve center

COLOMBO, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan government troops here Friday said that they were just 12 kms south of the Tamil Tiger rebel headquarters in their current thrust.

The media center for national security said that government troops in their bid to reach Kilinochchi had captured the key areas of Thunukkai and Uyilankulam.

Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu in the north are the only two districts where the rebels have a presence in the entire island.

The government says the rebels are on the run and it will only be a matter of time before they are crushed.

During the last few weeks the state television has showed pictures of key rebel installations falling to advancing troops.
