THE Sinhala and Tamil New Year, which fell on April 13, will be celebrated in Qatar by the Sri Lankan community today on a grand scale.
The event, being organised by the Sri Lankan Co-ordinating Committee (SLCC) and the Sri Lankan embassy, is to be held at the Al Hambal Boys Secondary school grounds near The Mall on D ring road from 7am to 6pm.
Sri Lankan Ambassador S B Atugoda will be the chief guest. Contests in 100m, 1500m and 4x100m relay, and traditional items such as kotta pora, kamba adeema, kana mutti bidima, raban tharangaya, avurudu kumari and fancy dress will be held for teenagers and adults.
Several events for children will also be held.
An exhibition volleyball match by Wakrah Sports Club will be played.
Doha-based band ‘Strangers’, led by drummer Nuwan Douglas Samarakoon, will perform with actress and singer Himali Sayurangi and Bandula Wijeweera who have been specially flown in by SriLankan Airlines.
“Children from the community will perform dances adding glamour to the event,” SLCC president Lenny Cramer said. The registration is from 7am to 9am.
Traditional Sri Lankan breakfast sponsored by Gulf Paradise Hotel, Ramada Plaza and InterContinental Doha will be served from 7.30am to 9.30am.
The main sponsor is Seylan Bank Sri Lanka, and the main airline sponsor is SriLankan Airlines. The sponsors are Sri Lanka Quantity Surveyors Association, Al Wasl Furniture, New White Oceanic Restaurants, Neth Lanka Food City, Al Bateel Security, Al Sabbah, and Qartas Metal Works.
