மன்னாரில் நிலைகொண்டுள்ள இராணுவத்தின் 58ஆவது படையணியினர் தற்போது தமது நிலைகளிலிருந்து முன்னேறி கிளிநொச்சி மாவட்டத்துக்குள் முன்னகர்ந்துள்ளதாக இராணுவ பேச்சாளர் பிரிகேடியர் உதய நாணாயக்கார தெரிவித்தார்.
இதன் பிரகாரம் விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் உள்ள கிளிநொச்சி மற்றும் முல்லைதீவு ஆகிய இரு மாவட்டங்கள் மடடுமே படையினரின் கட்டுப்பாட்டுக்குள் கொண்டுவரப்படவுள்ளதாகவும் அவர் தெரிவித்தார்.
இது தொடர்பில் கருத்து தெரிவித்த இராணுவ பேச்சாளர் மேலும் கூறியதாவது
ஈழப் போராட்டத்தில் விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் அதிசக்தி வாய்ந்த கட்டுப்பாட்டுத் தளமாக விளங்கும் கிளிநொச்சி மாவட்டத்துக்குள் படையினர் தெற்கிலிருந்து முன்னகர்வை மேற்கொண்ட முதலாவது சந்தர்ப்பமாகவே இது கருதப்படுகிறது.
இதுவரையில் வடக்கிலிருந்து மட்டுமே படையினர் கிளிநொச்சி மாவட்டத்துக்குள் பிரவேசித்தனர். ஆயினும் இம்முறை படையினரால் மேற்கொண்ட முன்னகர்வு முயற்சி படையினருக்கு கிடைத்த பாரிய வெற்றியே ஆகும். கடந்த வருடம் மன்னார் பிரதேசத்திற்குள் முன்னகர்ந்த இராணுவத்தின் 58ஆவது படையணியினர் விடத்தல் தீவு, இலுப்பைக்கடவை, மற்றும் வெள்ளாங்குளம், என்று தொடர்ந்தும் தமது முன்னகர்வு முயற்சிகளை மேறந்கொண்டு ஏ32 வீதியினூடாக கிளிநொச்சி மாவட்டத்துக்குள் முன்னகர்ந்துள்ளனர்.
இதேவேளை நாட்டின் இடதுபுற கடற்கøரப் பிரதேசம் முழுவதம் தற்போது இராணுவத்தினரின் கட்டுப்பாட்டுக்குள் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டுள்ளமை குறிõப்பிடத்தக்கது. இதனால் விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் கடல்மார்க்க நடவடிக்கைகள் அனைத்தும் தற்போது படையினரால் முறியடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.
இதன் அடிப்படையில் விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் முழுக் கட்டுப்பாட்டின் கீழ உள்ள கிளிநொச்சி மற்றும் முல்லைதீவு ஆகிய இரு மாவட்டங்களும் வெகு விரைவில் படையினரால் கைப்பற்றப்படவுள்ளன.

COLOMBO, SRI LANKA (AP) - Sri Lankan government troops have entered the district housing the Tamil Tiger rebels' de facto capital for the first time in 11 years, the military said Saturday as a regional summit opened in the capital.
Fierce new fighting between government forces and the rebels across the country's embattled northern region killed 38 rebels and 14 soldiers, the military said.
Leaders and officials from eight South Asian nations gathered Saturday in Colombo for an annual regional summit at which they are expected to approve accords on fighting terrorism, including freezing funds used for attacks.
The government sealed off roads and sent 19,000 troops and soldiers onto the streets of the capital to prevent any bombings. A rebel attack in the capital during the summit would be deeply embarrassing for the government.
Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said army troops had crossed into Kilinochchi district, where the rebels' de facto capital is located, in fighting Thursday for the first time in 11 years.
He said troops had moved about half a mile into the district.
Fighting also took place throughout Friday as the army pushed into rebel-held territory in the Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Mannar and Welioya regions, Nanayakkara said.
In the worst battle, 11 soldiers and nine rebels were killed in the village of Mallavi in Mullaitivu, he said. Fighting in Vavuniya killed 15 rebels and one soldier, he said.
Scattered battles in Mannar and Welioya killed 14 insurgents and two soldiers, he said.
Troops on Saturday captured rebel-held Vellankulam village in Mannar, the last rebel stronghold in the area, Nanayakkara said.
The whole Mannar area is now under the control of government forces, he said, adding that information about casualties was not immediately available.
Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan was not available for comment. Both sides routinely exaggerate enemy casualties and underreport their own. Independent verification of the fighting is not possible because journalists are barred from the war zone.
The new fighting along the front lines of the 20-year-old civil war comes despite a declaration from rebels that they would observe a unilateral cease-fire from July 26 in honor of the summit. However, the rebels have said they would defend themselves if attacked.
The government rejected the cease-fire gesture and has continued its offensive against their de facto state in the north, saying the rebels are trying to buy themselves time to regroup after a series of battlefield losses.
The summit of the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation brings together the heads of government of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The Tamil rebels have been fighting for an independent state in the north and east since 1983, following decades of marginalization of ethnic Tamils by governments dominated by the Sinhalese majority. The fighting has escalated in recent months after the government vowed to crush the rebels by the end of the year.
More than 70,000 people have been killed in the conflict.

Reaching to another significant milestone of the Wanni liberation operation, the heroic army soldiers in task Force 1 captured the Vellankulam town, the LTTE's last stronghold in Mannar District this afternoon, August 02.
According to the latest information received from the Mannar front, following the fierce gun battle occurred during last few day, troops have advanced into the Vellankulam town area this afternoon despite the stiff resistance given by the terrorists to protect the strategically important build-up area which links western cost and Mankulam with a direct supply route via Tunukkai and Mallavi.
At least 30 LTTE terrorists were killed and more terrorists have withdrawn via sea routes with their casualties due to the effective fire power launched by the troops, ground sources said.
Two main fortified LTTE camps were located in the Vellankulam town area and LTTE terrorists withdrawn loosing after Vidattaltivu and Illuppaikkadavai had reorganized in the Vellankulam area to make resistance for the advancing troops.

Vellankulam about to fall
The Sri Lanka Army, finally set foot in the district of Kilinochchi last evening as part of a fully mobilized operational army after over a decade. Although Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) teams have gone well beyond Kilinochchi, a massive mobilization of troops such as this has never entered Kilinochchi in over a decade. The 58 Division, facing stiff resistance from Tigers at Vellankulam, effectively surrounded the village to cut off the enemy from three directions, in preparation for further operations to come. It was during this course of action that they entered Kilinochchi District by crossing the Vellankulam-Tunukkai road to the east of Vellankulam.
Tigers, taken by surprise at Illuppakadavai, have dug large trenches around Vellankulam in advance to prevent faster mobilization of armour. 58 troops, spearheaded by specially trained bunker-buster teams from 2 Commando, will take the upper-hand soon as the Tigers are unable to resist the Army's small group, armour, artillery and MI-24 attacks launched day and night, field commanders said.
If the LTTE loses Vellankulam, it will expose the grounds of tactical importance (GTI) of Tunukai, Mallavi and Mankulam, thus exposing the A-9 and eventually Kilinochchi. If they lose Vellankulam, the last bastion remaining for the LTTE in the west coast would be Nachchikuda in Pooneryn.
Moving further north to Nachchikuda is not an option for the Tigers as the 53 and 55 could get mobilized at any time. In other words, the loss of Vellankulam, Tunukai, Mantai and Mankulam in that order would expose Kilinochchi and subsequently Pooneryn, thus reducing the Tigers to mere insurgents within a matter of few months unless Prabhakaran comes up with a series of daring attacks, which is unlikely at this point.
