One-Click Shutdown

Follow these simple steps for One-Click Shutdown:

1.) Navigate to your desktop.

2.) On the desktop, right-click and go to New, then to Shortcut (in other words, create a new shortcut).

3.) You should now see a pop-up window instructing you to enter a command line path.

4.) Enter one of these as the path:

* Use this path if your operating system is Windows 95, 98, or Me:
C:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe,exitwindows

* Use this path if your operating system is XP:

The Steps: One Click Shutdown Button Shortcut

1. Shutdown shortcut: The first step to a your one click shutdown shortcut button, is to right-click on your desktop, now choose New, then choose Shortcut. The Windows Shortcut Wizard will appear. In the box that appears, in the "location of shortcut area" type in shutdown -s to shutdown. For the name leave it shutdown or type in a new name like SHUTDOWN or OFF.

In the box that appears, in the "location of shortcut" area type in shutdown -r to reboot. For the name type in Reboot or Restart.

3. After you have create your shortcuts on your desktop, just double-click on one to shut down or reboot your computer. Now it time to customize your new shortcuts. One Click Shutdown Button Shortcut. Remember to come back to WebTechGeek.com for more how to's!

4, Switches you can use with shutdown shortcuts. There are some switches you can use to customize your shutdown shortcuts. To use the switches type in, shutdown -s will shut down PC, shutdown -r will reboot PC, shutdown -f will forces any running applications to shot down, shutdown -l will log off the current user, shutdown -t nn will indicates the duration of delay, in seconds, before performing the action, and shutdown -c "message" will display a message in the System Shutdown windows, max 127 characters and must be enclosed in quotation marts.

5. I use these two technique to create one shutdown & one reboot shortcuts on my desktop, one for turning off my computer, and one for rebooting. These are the ones I use:

shutdown -s -t 04 -c "later Geek!" - This one will shut down the PC.
shutdown -r -t 04 -c "Rebooting Now!" - This one will reboot the PC.
6. Just a little more customizing. Now your need to change the icons to a better looking icons. Right click on your new shutdown shortcut and pick properties on the menu. Then click on change icon, now pick a new icon for your shortcuts. I picketed the red icon for the shutdown shortcut and a green icon for the reboot shortcut. The shutdown shortcuts are automatically put on your desktop, but to make it more convent I put them both on my toolbar. You can move them by dragging and dropping them on to your quick launch toolbar, it up to you.

Now you have two new one click shutdown and reboot shortcut buttons on your desktop and or toolbar.

No Log-in option in XP

Not everyone needs to log in to use a PC. If you feel that a login is
unnecessary for the application or setting that you use an XP PC in, you can set

XP to require a username and password. Go to Start -> Run -> "control
userpasswords2" and press enter. Uncheck the box that reads "Users must
enter..." and press "OK." Say goodbye to user names and passwords, but remember that doing this makes your PC very insecure.

Another XP hidden tools

Private Character Editor

Yet another utility included with Windows XP that is hidden from GUI view...Private Character Editor. The description follows copyed from the help files:

Using Private Character Editor (PCE), you can create up to 6,400 unique characters (such as special letters and logos) for use in your font library. PCE contains basic tools for creating and editing characters, along with more advanced options.

The utility has an embedded help file, so you can go through it to figure out how to use it. To access the program,

Start Menu > Run > type "eudcedit"

A 5 Step Guide to increase the speed of your computer!

Here are a few simple tips to make your computer run faster (XP Users Only) -

Click Start, Control Panel, System, Adavanced Tab then clcik the performance settings button.

From here Select Adjust for best performance on the Visual effects tab - this will decrease your hardware acceleration.

Click Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programes. When here you should move any unnecessary programmes that you rarely use.

Click Start, All Programmes, Startup , then remove all programmes in this list, as your computer will have less programmes to open on startup which will also speed it up.

Or you can buy a RAM upgrade, which will speed up the computers RAM, allowing you to open and close programmes much faster.

And finnaly a simple tip is too not over estimate your PC and too keep the amount of running programmes down to minimum e.g dont leave your media player open whilst in the middle of watching a movie.

I hope this 5 step guide helps

Easily rename the Recycle Bin

Easily rename the Recycle Bin

If you (like me) would like to be able to rename the Recycle Bin to something else (Trash, Waste, Shredder, etc) then this tweak will make it easy to do so.

Open up your favorite plain text editor (notepad, for example) and copy the following text into a new file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\ShellFolder]
"Attributes"=hex:50,01,00,20
"CallForAttributes"=dword:00000000

Now save this text file as a .reg file, such as "Rename Recycle Bin.reg" and put it wherever you like. Double click on the file, and when it asks you if you want to import it into the registry, choose Yes. You'll notice a new option in the right-click menu to Rename the Recycle Bin. You can also rename it by highlighing the Bin and hitting F2, or by highlighting it and clicking on the file name (just like renaming any other file.

If you want to turn off this new feature, make another .reg file with the same content as above, but change the first number in the "Attributes"=hex: line from 50 to 40 and import that file into the registry.

how 2 lock any folder so no1 else can see it

Hide your folders from your parents

U can lock any folder without using any software.just use the codes given below u can redirect the folder to control panel, internet explorer etc., by renaming the files just paste the code for example if u have a folder in d: which is named "HELLO" then rename it to Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}. thats all ur folder will redirect to control panel. when somebody clicks on it it won't open but just redirect to control panel
here are the codes for each location

1-Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

2-Internet Explorer.{FBF23B42-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}

3-Recycle Bin.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

4-My Computer.{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

5-My Documents.{ECF03A32-103D-11d2-854D-006008059367}

6-Fonts.{BD84B380-8CA2-1069-AB1D-08000948F534}

to unlock the folder

Go to Start>RUN>CMD

If the folder is in d: then go to that drive
then type: dir/x then the folder is shown as for example with control panel it shows as contro~1.{21
rename this folder to any name using command "ren control~1.{21 myfolder" without quote ok
thats it all over..... U can lock and unlock the folder

This doesnt work on Vista

how 2 lock any folder so no1 else can see it

Another way would be to
1. Right Click on a particular folder and go to properties
2. Click on the Security Tab and Select Deny Full Control.

Should you wish to go further
3. Click on Advanced.
4. Uncheck the "Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child Objects......."

To enable the Security tab
a)Go to the Folder options
b)Tools > Folder Options > View > uncheck use simple file sharing (recommended) - scroll to the bottom of the view window.

To ensure that the security tab doesn't appear, after steps 2 or step 4 redo steps a) and b). Ensure that the Checkbox use simple.... is checked

Increase Your Bandwidth By 20%!!!

Increase your Bandwidth by 20%
Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth! Get it back

A nice little tweak for XP. M*crosoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)

Here's how to get it back:

Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the "

This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:

Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :

"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.
works on XP Pro, and 2000

other OS not tested.

Forgot Your Password On XP?

1. Restart you computer

2.When booting, press F8 and select "Safe Mode"

3.After getting to the user menu. Click on a user and this time it will not ask you for a password

4.Go to Start>Run and type "CMD" (without the quotes).

5.At command prompt type in "cd C:WindowsSystem32" (without the quotes), I am assuming C is your System/Windows Drive

6.For safety purposes first make a backup of your Logon.Scr file.. You can do this by typing in "Copy to Logon.scr to Logon.bak" (without the quotes)

7.Then type "copy CMD.EXE Logon.scr"(without the quotes)

8.Then type this command, I will assume that you want to set Administrator's password to "MyNewPass" (without the quotes)

9.Now, type this in (I am assuming that you are still in the directory C:WindowsSystem32) , "net user administrator MyNewPass" without the quotes

10. You will get a message saying that it was successful, this means Administrator's new password is "MyNewPass" (without the quotes)

11. Restart the PC and you will login as Administrator (or whatever you chose to reset) with your chosen password

Bug @ Notepad?

Play this around to your friends/colleague if you are extremely bored

Open a new file @ Notepad (an empty ones)

Type " Bush hid the facts " (without the quotes) OR " John hid the facts " (without the quotes)

Save it to any filename you want in .txt format

Close it and reopen the file you just saved...see what you get

Now the big question W.H.Y? Explanation given at the link noted below.

http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2004/03/24/95235.aspx

PROTECT YOUR FILES/FOLDERS WITHOUT SOFTWARE

1. try this first on a NEW blank folder.
2. Rigt-click on the folder/file u want to hide
3. go to properties>security
4. press the advanced button
5. under the permissions uncheck the check box that sayz Inherit from parent the permission entries that aply to child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here
6. On the MessageBox click the Remove button
7. Click Apply or OK
8. Confirm every window that ask or warns about anything

- Now if you try to enter the folder copy, move or delete it it will pop an Acess Denied MessageBox. If you want to enable the folder/file just repeat the process, except on the fifth step where you'll have to check that unhecked checkbox.

WARNING : U CAN DO THIS ONLY IF YOU'RE AN ADMINISTRATOR. IT WORKS 100% ON WIN XP, AND I THINK IT SHOULD WORK ON WIN2000.

IF YOU WANT TO HIDE FILE/FOLDER IN WINDOWS 98 (EXAMPLE C:\SEXPIC) GO TO START-PROGRAMS-MSDOS AND :

1. GO TO THE FOLDER WHERE'S THE FILE YOU WANT TO HIDE (FROM THE EXAMPLE IT IS C:\ )

2. TYPE REN SEXPIC _WINFILES, EXCEPT WHERE THE _ IS YOU SHULD HOLD ALT AND ON THE NUMERIC KEYBOARD TYPE 255, LET GO OF ALT AND TYPE WINFILES (WINFILES IS AN EXAMPLE NAME, IT IS LESS SUSPICIOUS).

3. TO REVERSE THE PROCESS GO TO THE SAME FOLDER WHERE YOUR DISABLED FILE/FOLDER IS AND TYPE REN _WINFILES SEXPIC. EXPLANATION FOR TYPING THE _ SIGN IS THE SAME AS BEFORE.

Lock a folder without any software

Suppose you want to lock the folder games in d: which has the path D:\Games.In the same drive create a text file and type
ren games games.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}
Now save this text file as loc.bat

create another text file and type in it
ren games.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} games
Now save this text file as key.bat

Now you can see 2 batch files loc and key.Press loc and the folder games will change to control panel and you cannot view its contents.Press key and you will get back your original folder.

try it out!!!!!!!

Shutdown,restart shortcuts easy

x: s for shutdown
r for restart
xx: this is time by seconds to shutdown or restart
f: force the pc to do what u want
c: for comment

2. save this text
3.change its extention to cmd for example newtext.cmd

Speed up you Pc (10%)

Copy the text into a txt file then name it Speed.bat

Create an Invisible Folder

You ever have a folder on your computer that you really dont want any one to find? You can make this folder hidden but then you have to un-hide all the folders when ever you want to find it. So how can you make a folder truly invisible? Follow these simple steps and your unmentionables will stay that way.

1. Right click where ever you want the invisible folder to be and select create a new folder.

2. Right Click on the folder and hit rename. Erase the name of the folder so there is nothing there.

3. If you try to stop here windows will tell you that you need to provide a name. So to get around this… with the name field still active hold down ALT and press 0160 on the number pad (make sure Num Lock is on), release alt

You should now have a blank name with nothing but a folder next to it

4. Now click on the nameless folder and right click. Select Properties.

5. Go to the Customize tab.

6. Find and press the Change Icon button. Scroll through the icons until you find one that has no image.

7. Hit OK and you have an invisible folder!

With the invisible folder you can hide what ever undesirables you have. Be it video games at work, pictures of your family or anything else you can think of “wink”.

The folder will show up for a brief second if you put it on your desktop. For that reason it might be smart to place it inside a folder or amongst a group of folders.

Happy Hiding!
